Foothills Food Hub is a program of the McDowell Local Food Advisory Council. It is a central location for local farmers to diversify their market opportunities. We receive healthy fresh and frozen food donations in bulk for pickup by partner agencies and food pantries, making it easier to provide nutritious food to those in need. Additionally, it offers various services to improve health outcomes and increase community connectivity, including a commercial kitchen, and outreach center for community agencies.
At Foothills Food Hub, we are proud to work alongside 84 farmers in the Western North Carolina region, each of whom is dedicated to producing high-quality, locally sourced food. Our goal is to build a thriving local food system, and we achieve this by purchasing the freshest produce, meat, eggs, and other locally grown food items. These are then distributed to the community through a variety of channels, including pantries, distributions, and other trusted partners.
In 2023, we were able to purchase 92,080.12 pounds of fresh produce, meat, eggs, honey, and rice from our local farmers. We were thrilled to be able to distribute this bounty of healthy and nutritious food directly to our community via various programs, pantries, and distributions. Not only did we provide access to high-quality food, but we were also able to support and uplift our local farmers, strengthening our community as a whole.
We couldn't fulfill our mission without the assistance of our dedicated volunteers. We depend on the support of our community, from sorting produce to distributing food boxes. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our volunteers for their unwavering commitment and hard work.
